FEILDING BENEVOLENT SOCIETY.
The abore Society held its annual meeting on the 7th instant, m the Corporation Office, the weather being so severe that it was feared the Schoolroom would hare been too cold for. the purpose. The chair was taken at 5.30 • p.m, by A. P. Halcombe, Esq., vicepresident, who opened the meeting by - informing the members that the term for- which tho late Executive were elected terminated on the 3rd instant, and, therefore, it was not for the officers i^°; tender their resignation, as their had absolutely lapsed ; and he called upon the late hon. secretary to read the annual report of the doings of the Society, for the year .1877-8, prior to any further 'business.' "In malting my report of the Society's "work during the past year, I must first ■J congratulate the members upon their promptness on all occasions to render their best services to those persons W;ho unfortunately required aid from iihe ■ r benevolent. • ■ ; "V: ?•''>-•': : . .'•'""■''■". • " The rases coming under the imme''ate notioe of this Society during the ---jgß^year were only four m number, the heads of families ; but of three were persons with large families, who, _with;their children, were throw|jjntovdepp'.distress. , ■■** The first case was that of working 7 , swag-raan, ( who was found m a whai*e '- at Awahuri,' prostrate from sever© illnessr The poor fellow was carried to •- -Feilding,' and attendedjby Dr. Jbhnuton, at. Government expense ; and the Robert . Wa>dr .Esq., haying interested himself to have the patient taken to the Wansanui Hospital, the Society provided the man with ~ Y warm clothing, and other matters suit- '■-! able' td his^ case, and lid went away m charge of the Constable, heartily thanking his benefactors. To this case the Hon. John .'£ Johnston, " mogfc generously subscribed £M>. . i The third case was that of a family whose male head was obliged to go away from Peilding from causes to which it is not necessary to allude here, suffice it to say that the Ladies Committee left nothing wanting m the way , offood, raiment, and railway fare. i : :, v Th^urthcase waathat of a labouring man named John Crook, an immi- • irrant, brpngTit out under the E. &C. Aid Corporation. This man suffered, from some internal disease, and on the - adrioe of his medical attendant, Dr. Johnston, the Society sent the patient to Wanganui Hospital, from which inttttutibn hewas remorod, at his own reriuest by hlis friends. The Benevolent Society were thus relieved from further i responsibility.
