Fropn Thopias^BoacK,.- ferryxaan,f Oh'au, requesting the Council tq furnigh him with, a pair of ten-foot oars. — Bequest granted ■ :Ut There were several other letters read, bat they were of no interest to the public. At two o'clock the Council adjourned and resolved itself into a special meeting, ill order to consider a resolution proposed by Cr. Halcombe, seconded by Cr. Macarthur, — "That the number of members for the Taonui Hiding be reduced to one m order to give the second member to the, .Manchester Riding." '"■■•■•■'-« .":.'•.; V, Cr. JELllcombe statM^that m bringing forward the .motion, he. would do«o without any lengthy remarks; Althdugh it might certainly, appear, as if it were an%ction of retaliation, he assured tlie r Council that ; sueh : was jaotfthe case,.and; thti statistics . of the , rateable property „ m J.each -riding r -would : - be 1 cohclusire prdbf that Manchester Riding; .was ; by t : no, means fairly represented. By an extract from' the County Rate -Book it would be fott-nd that Manchester had 'rateably property for the year 1877 to

the value of £16,215 ; Awahou, £9,868 ; Kawakawa, £9,430; Oroua, £8,368; Taonui, £6,888 ; Horowhenua, £2,534 ; and Kiwitea, £1,500. So that it would be seen that the Manchester Biding could fairly claim to hare two members, having three times the rateable property of Taonui. ; Cr. McNeil referred to the large population which was rapidly springing up on the Fitzherbert side of the river, and considering the general support given by the members of the Taonui r Biding to Crs. Halcombe and Macar- " thur, characterised the prosent motion ungenerous and exhibiting a selfish spirit. ' . ; „. Or. MidARTHTTB acknowledged that a compact had existed as stated, but as-; serted that it had been deliberately I broken on ...two" occasions. However, the present action was altogether 'out* A ' side of a spirit of retaliation. CrJ'SNBLSON was very pleased td have an opportunity of clearing himself, of the charge of double-dealing and twofacedness which, had been brought; ; against him. He had been accused o£ being inimical to the construction of tho 'bridge at the Gorge Perry, kit/he , now "gave the statement a most unqalified denial. He certainly did speak urfavor of the making of a road on the south - aide of the ferry, but he did so because it was a necessity, while he looked upon the building of the bridge as a certainty. JQE,i as was falsely stated, he was op» posed to the structure, why should^ ho have gone to the expense of- parchment •for a petition praying for that, particular object, which had been presented consecutively for the past three years. He> looked upon its erection as of equal •' benefit to Taonui and Manchester Hidings. With regard ltd "the unfounded and rash statements made by Cr. Hal* combe m reference to the- petition fromrK Taonui, as he informed the meeting of: • settlers that handed: it to : him ■ for pre*sentation that it would- be to conisult their member, ho thought that; gentleman should'; recall J his -fdnaerH 1 remarks. ■ '- •> >\ fOr.; McNeil moved, and Cr.
