Pauy mptu, one of a group of islands, is only between ten and twenty feet , high m the ;centre: The cyclone swept .over the most /populous and commercial'? island m the group. Tlieo'ising of the sea caused by the hurricane washed away every house, and even the bodies out of the graves, which were subsequently eaten by the pigs. drowned. Twenty boats, averaging four to five tons each, were lost, and many thousands of cocoa-nut trees washed away. A steamer has been sent from Tahite to ascertain the extent of the disaster.' More than 150 persons were drowned, £50,000 worth of property destroyed, and the copra trade ruined for years to come. '
