Whaieveb may be the short comings of the present Government, or however defective their political programme may be, there leanjjbe, no doubtthat they are entitled to credit for-the manner m which the official machinery is being worked, and that they evince, a most commendable promptitude m carrying pat any steps which may have been resolved upon. It was only m our last issue that we noticed that the Waste Lands Board at its sitting agreed that the unsurveyed land m the Fitzherbert Slock, adioihing the Fitzherbert township, should be surveyed into sections varying from fifty, to two hundred acres, and already the order has been given by the Department to have the proposed work carried out. By Thursday's mail, Mr Dundais, they District Engineer, received instructions from the Survey Office, to visit the land m question and to furnish such information to the office m Wellington as will enable the Government to place something as a guide„to ; conti actors who may tender for the Survey, This praiseworthy expedition is a most cheering contrast to the usual official circumlocution and delay. It is, however, to vbe hoped that a: like laudable zeal m the prosecution of the other >wprks of vital interest to the District will be exhibited, and that both the Survey of the Manawatu end of the Waikanae line, and the formation of roads through the Karere Block, wiilbe at onceTproceeded with.- 'Meanwhile we must be grateful forß small favors,, .and accept 'ill such with b.ecoihm£f|gratitude.
