The Manawatu Times. SATURDAY, APRIAL 6, 1878.

Que l?an^itikeicoiitein|)orary publishes m its last issue an official time table of the line, which, we .presume has been' furnished to it by the ; Hallway Department at .the former •place. v In acknowledging its -receipt the "Advocate "states that it has been courteously \forwar_ded for publication , forthe information of the settlers of the ' ; IRangitikei-Manawatu District, and that the object of publishing it is to ascertain whether it will suit the general re- ; quirements of the districti We perfectly agree with the idea of placing the arrangements on a- kind of probationary i trial, and making them stand the test of public criticism, but we certainly do not approve of the manner m which that idea has been carried into effect. We' woiildiwishto ask the "Department why it was that we were not accorded a simii liar courtesy to that granted to pur oonr . temporary, and w^ of Manawatu were unsought and their ■ interests ignored? With all respect to our neighbors of Bangitikei, we claim, to be just as competent to offer suggestions Worthy, of notice, for the common weal as those who live on the other side of the river; and m that particular part which may affect ourselves, we hold we could dp so> very much better. The information bestowed, was furnished \ as a right or a favor.; If the former, a gross piece of negligence has Meii^cpmmitted ; and iE the latter, we, consider the ruling which made it such 'very ill-judged. In matters m which the public are deeply interested ■all due^publicity should be given, arid m doing so care should be taken-to prevent any official favoritism which may prove to be an injustice to any section of the community.. We do not for a moment object to" the "Advocate ", haying re- ,■ ceived the information, and its readers -thereby placed m a position to offer an .'■ opinion ; but we most strongly /object to be treated m a different manner, and m a matter so closely affecting the residents of Feilding, Halciombe, Palmerston, Sandpn, andFpxton, that their Opinions have been most studiously ignored. As we have hot been favored with the table, we cannot give it, but \re extract from the " Advocate '■'. a summarised explanation by whichv a clear • understariding can be am vecl :ai of the s arrivals and. departures of the trains at : the yariqi»s stations ;— Qn Mondays and Thursdays the afternoon train, leaving Wanganui at 5 p.m.,- which- on other days, goes no ; further than Halcpmbe, i will go right through to Foxton, where it is timed to arrive i'-M X 1.2 p.m. The corresponding- train which on other days leaves Ppxtbn at the same hour— <s p.m. — will not be despatched on these days until 8 p.m., arid wUI proceed as far as Halcpmbe,' where, passehgeral will remain all night. They will be able hpwevev, by leaviag by the first train m the morning to reach. Wanganui by 9^22 a.m. Through passengers to Wellingtoii f rom Warigariui will thus gain seven hours, leaving at $ p.m-aristertd of, as at present,. 10. a. m.. and will generally, arrive 1 m Wellington iiiider the twentyfour; hours.- Through passengers from Wellington will gain about a couple of hours, arriving. in Wanganui at 9.22 a.tn. instead of It a.m. [Since the above was m type we have received the table alluded to, from Mr! -Moinet, manager, atVPoxtori, bat. td6 late for insertion. We .must state ' tlikt we dp mot fora rapment imagine that the fault lies at his door, arid have to acknowledge *^ c uniform courtesy we have received at his hands. In our next issuie we inteid to jgi ye our opinion bri the proposed arrangemerif;. ■- ;, V
