A VOICE FROM TAONUI-STREET.
7 TO TJBCE ErilTOR. a. Sißj— Will yeu, kindly. insert these few lines m ybur valuable, cplumn. This Pne thing I ask for explanation, and that is : "What is it. we pay. rates for ? I was always given to uHtlerstand that it was to.make and keeppiir roads m repair, y The other day I Was going along Main-street, arid tp my great surprise I saw. three men eiigoged m constructing a kerb and a footpath, at, as I thought, a great waste of money. And •ho'Wj Sir, dent ypu think it would look better for the Road Board authorities to look of tier pur street a little better than what they have dbne^ one of the oldest streets m the town, and where there are about as Amany more inhabitants as there are m all Main-street put tegether— and that is Taonui-street, which is without road or footpaths^ arid" when there is a day's. rain it is almost ipipassable. It was bsid enough last winter, and Goodness knows whatit willbe now they have been hacking it about as they have done. SpmeLpepplc, I believe, call it ferming^ biit it -is the greatest master-piece pf fprmihg that ever I saw.' Now, Sir, I think you will agree with me if I say that a few chains of metalling ; would cpnvert.our mudpoiid into a respectable street, arid I shdidd say this ought tp be done before the wet weather sets m; and until it is done, Is think there will be but very few rates paid by us.^l am^ &c, ..'•*■--■ A HotrsßHOiDßrw ■:.
