X Friday. The Blanche brings news from Karatonga of a dreadful, hurricane at JPaumato, by which fully fire hundred lives were lost, and many vessels wrecked. A correspondent writing from Karatonga on March sth says:— "One of the Society's vessels arrived from Tahite reports that one of the Paumato I4gpoh Islands, named Anan, has been Completely swept by a hurricane, or tidal wave. Houses, trees, stores* and inhabitants are all gone. Mr Bosie, trading agent for Messrs Branders, Tahite, escaped with a few others. The greater of the group is devastated. Between 400 and 500 lives have been lost, beside^ several vessels." An eye-witness at Papete writes that the sea rose over the land, sweeping away everything. We retreated to 'the highest point, about 20 feet above' sea-level. 'Fortunately the cyclone abated when the water was within two feet bf us. The Tahite Government sent a man-of-war to the Island of KauKera, which suffered most, losing 117 people, and all the houses and boats. Messrs Branders lost three schooners, one cutter, twelve small boats, besides the whole establishment at Anan. The cyclone continued from the 7th February to the Bth.
