The great danger of stacking timber close to the ?oad was exemplified during the lal ter part of last week, when an accident took place, fortunately without serious consequences. Fop some time past a quantity . of timber has been, lying at the. platform, : close to the main road, at the Terrace-End of the- town, and on the occasion referred to ! Miss Stephens, schoolmistress, was proceeding homewards m the- dark, mounted : on horseback, when the animal shied at the obstacle, and threw her heavily to the ground. Beyond a good shaking, and the effects of the fright, no. djamage was sus- , t aiaedj, bu,t that such was the result is more a matter for- wonder than otherwise. The i pasties responsible for ihe- aceidjent have \ beea repeatedly warned of what might be I the consequence, but appearanxiou^. to, Ijftxe some convincing proof of the- djange», Mr Snelson,. chairman,, and Mr- Linton. xn^afobe.!^ of the School Commi|ttee, paid, an, official visit to the. public School, P.alra, erston, on Tuesday last. On inspecting, the r<?sL th#y found that while- the attendance m the month of November- of last year reached 100, during that just past the total muster on. the books was but 78, and the average attendance some where about 50. ■ The reason why the months of December and; Jia-nuary w;ere not taken, m. comparison, was. that a. portion, of eaclx was broken m u,ppn» by- hpljdays,. and? consoquenjtly,. m justice to, the- inpsfcei?. could: npb be- taken, as a fair average., Ipa, QxplanaJ ipn, of' the.. fjoJ^ng off; M*. ColjKns,. the- master- m. charge- a£ pre-. ■ sent, ga-ve- as a. reason, the- prevalence- of wjioopingrcougli m. the district, andi the fact that the- v-acaßcy, caused by the death ' of ttbe- head* inasteF) Mr Waite, had never bee.ii filled: up. We- are given, to, understand that m; the neighboring schools of Halcombe, Eeildjng, Eox.ton and Sanson, the usual, attendance is greater that at the Palmerston, even when- at its highest number, and we. certainly fail to. see. that there, is. any reason, that i£ should, be so. \ As, a chaiticteinstic- specimen- of to, what depths the. supporters of the late Ministry wall descend; to, suit their purposes, it may be stated' that the. -Hon. G-eorge M'Lean, late Minister, of Pablic Works, and member • for- South. Palmerston^ told his constituents ' that Sir< Gteoyge. Gteey had no, intention of stopping at that place on his way North. , TJiifortujiately for- the veracity of gentleman, the.Pi'emier not oi% madp. a, stay, bui received a-most cordial inception there, during which some very uncomplimentary tilings : were said- of th.c- defunct Minister and unreliable, member. : Amongst the principal notiflcations contained; m. the. latest number of the G-overn-ment "Ghzette" are the resignations of Messrs.. Larnach and Reynolds, and the intimation that the recently-granted authority forfranking lettei-3, bestowed upon. Chairman, of Education. Boards, lias, been, reyoked..
At a meeting held at Whytes' Hotel, Foxfcon, on Saturday la3t, it was unanimously agreed to hold a Scratch Bice Meeting, on Friday, the sth April proximo. Being too late m the season', it was thought best not to hold a regular Annual Meeting. The following gentlemen were appointed Stewards — W. Eabinson, GL Edwards W' Barnett, J. Purcell, J. W. Liddell, Davidson, and F. W. Ruck. J. J. Whyte was appoiuted Judge ; Gr. Edwards, Starter ; and Mr Davidson, Clerk of the Course. The programe proposed was — Hurdle Race, Haok. Hurdle Raoe, Maiden Plate, Poney Race, Manawatu Stakes, Produce Stakes, and Consolation Stakes. The entries, we understand, will have to be sent m to F. W. Ruck at Whyte's Hotel, by the. 4th April. The cry is still they come ! A brace of strangers are to be born to the Fourth Estate, and Poverty Bay is to be the place of birth. The white residents of Qisborne are already well oatered for m the matter of newspaper literature by the " Standard " and the " Herald," and now the dusky sons of the soil may have a choice between two journals to be devoted to their particular interests. Messrs. Webb and Porter are to be the proprietors of the one, while Mr Grindell, late of the (< Waka Maori," is to guide the destinies of the other, on behalf of a company, m which shares to the amount of £700 have been subscribed. There may or may not be reaaon for dubbing the district Poverty Bay, but to speculative P-reaa men the title seems a misnomer. We received information that a little boy, the son of Mr Halcombe, while playing by the side of the Nakino Greek, neap his father's residence, Feilding* picked up a piece of quarts to which a considerable amount of gold was attached- That it was the precious metal is beyond a doubt, fop our informant— and; he is most relwble-^ tells us. it has been properly tested. The members of the B>man Catholic Church are notified through, our advertising columns, that there will be three Services m the Church, Palmerston on Sunday. Services will be at eleven m the morning and m the evening at seven, besides a special instruction at three o,' clock, which will be given m the German language. A meeting of the Fire Brigade was to have taken place last evening at balf-past seven o'clock, but although our reporter- was m waiting for three-quarters of an hour beyond that time, a sufficient number had not put m an, appearance, to. form, a quorum The Native Lands Court opens this morning at Foxton, Captain Symonds presiding. To-morrow it wiU hold its. sit-. ting m this' towr\.
