' According, to, telegraphic. report the.line betw§en,F,eildj#gans; Wanganui was u^ed for the first time on Wednesday last m the ! conveyance of a party of passengers from, I Feilding to, Wanganui. The ballasting, is npw pyopeedingjat a rapids rate, so., that m a yery few weeks regular, communication will be, established between Foxton. apd ) Wanganui. Ihis \^lL mark an important ■ epoch m, the, history of the, W^esb Coast. « Yet we dp not sup.p?se,that tlie- opening, of 1 this line "will: confer, any great cojntnercial advantages upon, either* Foston, or Pflji^ersj^on imjnediafely. T/he towns further north will be. benefited; provided; Wanganui affords a good; market for. tjieir, produce. We anticipate, thaf for. sp(np,tin>^.to^eofne .Wanganui. itself w v iH]besthe-,greftteeli gainer> , forthefacilfty. of eammnnication, will'giveJ;ho Wanganuj merchants., some command oyer .' tlie. IE tl>at advantage were to, be utilised only by their supplying 1 our local* s-toyekeepers on, terms as advan- " tageous as. thp? e.oji which they can. be sup- " pjied, f rp.jn ( VSTelUngtor\ we wpuld \^ish them jgppd) speed;, but W,anganjii has, already i shewn, herself sufficiently enterprising to try fo-r some of tlie retail trade of thpse towns. onr. cemmujiifc|ies \tjXk study their. own interests. they will set their fuccs ' against all aggression of this sort. In the neighbouring Colonies the opening up of railways, between a large, town and, several sjnalLqugs has resulted; rcpeately m ruining the commercial prosperity of tlie small towns amtistivntivtgtheir.growth, simply because the inhabitants could not resist the infatuation. that, it is to their interest to draw suj)plies from the lnrger town. There is always
some danger of this result unless the small | towns are engaged m extensive manufactures, or are backed up by a forge producing district. Wanganui has looked upon the Manawatu District ?for-j a~ long?, time. with,, selfish intent, and the "'HeVn,lcl**'gave,a very decided growl of disapprobation when the project of the Hutt, and Palnierstqn Biilway became iiqiijiinertt. It is. perfectly right that this- district should be cjnnecbed with Wanganui, but not at all proper that it should have easy communicar tion with Wellington. The selfishness of this is sufficiently apparent, and just a trifle too aggressive- to b& pleasant. ,. We advise the inhabitants of the M'lnawatii Jtfsfcricfc to so far imitate as to consider the interests of Wanganui as secondary to their ovjfri. The Panorama of the Rasso-Turfcish Ww was exhibited with success on Wednesday night m the Foresters' Hall, Palrayerstott. On Thursday the attendance wns not so large, but those present sesined to enjoy the entertainment much. The pictures were of a striking character. Refinement m the execution was not ain^ed atf and indeed scarcely required m; picti^res. designed to be viewed from, a distance. There- were m all three or four dozen picture* each o>f which] was explained by the lecturer as it appeared for a brief while before the spectators. The attack on the Schipka Pass excited a good deal of interest ; also, "On the Danube above Rustchuck," and " A Corner m a Redoubt." Perhaps the most enjoyable 1 part was the sepresentatiqn of an engageinei>t|between Russian torpedoes and $ Turkish imnelad wherein the mimic Sight vFas. waged ten the sinking of the ironclad and the escape of tha cray? m a ; hoat. Prizes were distribute! at tha chwe of fche e\hib.itic\iv I#s.t uight, we understand, fche entertainment was presented a,t Foxton and wi]|J be repeated there to-night. Qn, Monday night it will open m Feuding", on Tuesday night at Bulls, and on Wednesday night at Martqn.
