The Manawatu Times. SATURDAY, FEBRUARY 23, 1878.
We nottoe, from the reports of the la.te nijeetinga c^f the "jyCanftwatu Highways Bo^rd: and the County Co.uncil^ tha,t an effort is now being made, by those public bodies to impress upon the. Government the necessity of constructing a l^ne of road; f ro.in the Gorge along the south side of the Mana.watu River to the bridge at Palmeraton. That such a line of ro^d is necessary ra apparent enougb x aud it is to, be. hoped that the, present appeal to, the Government msOet i^ith, th^e favorable consideration it? deserves. The purchasers of lajid QA Fitzherbert side, are pja.ced, m a. mpst unfortunate position from the want of roads m that locality, and are. totally prevented from utilising their properties to any. advantage. Spjne tjme ago, an agitation was got up m connection with this road, and a ' public, meeting held fop. the purpose of discussing the propriety of petitioning I;he Gpxemment ta, set ' ■ apart fun,d«L sufficient for the. construction of the line now; m question, j There was some difference of opinion expressed at this meeting which had • the, effect of soaking i^ts result anything but unanimous. The inhabitants residing between the Square and the Gorge on the present Napier, line of road; were afraid lest the construction of the.proposedfroad should militate against the, erection of the bridge at the Lower Ferry, and diyert the whpje of the traffic ,from its present course into, the | new, lin.e. This wap the. chief argnmenfc used at the meeting by the property holders. along the. present - line. Taking a broader view of. the case, it seems apparent that a road m,ust be. m^de at n°, distant date through this new block of valuable, country, and that its termination „ must be.a,t Pajmprston.: such being 1 the. case, the step now taken by our L public governing bodies, is a siiep m 1 the. right direction, and- shouhi receive the support it merits, both locally and by the Governnipnt. . The question of the. bridge at the ' Low.er Ferry, is a most important ; onje, and shQiildj np^j be lost sight of' ]by the. p.ublic. A great necessity exisjbs fap. its construction, and, thepromises made f rom 4 ti?ne to, time,, ' have. naturally- led? thepublixj to. look • upon this as a work to be undertaken ampi np distant date. W 6 - think- ! it v^ould be very unw, ise. and unjust ' to advocate the making of the. one, 'at; the expense, of the.ofther» The, ' disVicfc is entitled to. both oi these i important works, and if honest and. persevering effofts are made, both • the works will doubtless, be. i.n due. • tipie accomplished.
