We are requested to remind the subscribers of the Palmerston Reading-room tlvat a meeting o£ members will take place to-, night. at half past eight, m the- upper room of: the Public- Hall. The object of the meeting is to consider the report of the Committee whioh was some time ago appointed to devise meansrfoiv the working of the institution. ; Office-re, afoo, for the- present, year, will , doubtless b& appointed at this meeting, and the Reading-room be floated fairly into session. All who have an interest m the institution, therefore, or who desire to express a wish as to its management should make a point of being p>e3ent. A meeting of the croditors of Mr Wulter Coker is advertised for the 2tst inst., ta be held at the Court-housej Wanganiiu
Mr Cooper, of Eangitikei Line, has sent a very superior sample of wheat to this office. It is the produce of bush land and -will •average at least 40 bushels to the acre. It has been said that it will not pay to grow wheat on biwh land. This may apply to land of an .mferioi* quality, but it does not seem to apply to the class of land m this district. Vt'e think that the very fact of 40 bushels of good wheat being produced per acre, should act as a powerful inducement to a great many, to give this important question at least a fair trial prior to coining* to any "hasty conclusion. The School Committees have now before them the list of candidates that have been nominated as members of the Board for the Education District of Wanganui. The number nominated is twenty-two, and it is the duty of each Committee to select not more than nine from this number, and send the names so selected to the secretary of the Education Board at Wellington during the present month. We are glad to observe that the Committee's m the Manawatu portion of the district have been unanimous m their choice, and if thay will each include the names of Messrs Dalrymple and Sanson m the list to be sent to Wellington there will scarcely be any necessity to resort to the expedient of plumping, as has been suggested m other parts of the district. But on thi3 head we offer no advice. We are anxious only that this county should be fairly represented on the Board, and whatever action our local- Committees now take it cannot by any possibility be over-repre-sented. We desire to call public attention to the important auction sale that will take place on the promises of Messrs Roe and G-reen on Saturday next. Mr Gk M. Snelson has, m view of extensive alterations being made to their business premises, received instructions from this firm to sell at their store a variety of effects consisting of various lines m holloware, jgroceries, and ironmongery. Sale to commence at 1.30 p.m. Professor Jacobs performed m the Foresters' Hall, on Monday evening; His sleight of hand tricks, were very cleverly done, and his powers of ventriloquism, interspersed with drollery, created astonishment, and aln.u3em.ent throughout the entire performance. The company are now en route for Halcombe, where- they will play one or two night's during the end of the present week. We would remind" .all tho3e who are interested m the Wesleyan Church S ibbath School, that on Sunday next, at 3 p.m. and 7 p.m., the E.3V J. Lawry of Marton, will preach sermons m its behalf, m the Public Hall Palmerston. The children will sing hymn 3 m cannaotion with t!i3 servie3. We trust that this interesting service, will receive the support it merits, and that a handsome sum be banded over to the school fund, as the result of the meeting.
