The neocessity that existed for the old Committees to elect the new Education Boards appears to he now obviated by a proposal to postpone the election of the Boards for one month. This will give time for the New Committees to be elected prior to the nomination of the Boards. We subjoin the copyof a circular bearing upon the subject, for. which we -are .-indebted to the " Wanganui Herald": — Department of Justice, (Education Branch) . Wellington, 29fch .Dec, IB7fr. Sib,— -I have to draw your attention to Sections 13 (subsections 1 and 2) 18, 63, and 64 of the "Education Act, 1877." It is very desirable that the duties prescribed by subsections 1 and two of section 13 shoitfdhbe performed by the new Committees to be 'elected under the Act, and that the old Committees have all January to prepaid the Annual Reports required by section 103. This cannot be done unless advantage be taken of the power given to the Gtoveruav- in Council under section 18 to postpone' the election of the new Education Boards. The Board is requested therefor© to be good enough to fix some day towards the end of January, say the last Monday, for the first meeting of Householders for the election of School Committees. See section 63. The Q-overnor in Council will be advised under section 18 to postpone the election of Education Boards for one month. If this is done, the old Committees would have time to prepare their Annual Reports ; the new Committees would in February nominate two. persons and in Mtirch elect nine persons as members of the Board, the election by the Board could be held, say on April 10th to 15tb, and the members of the ne\v Boards could take office on April 30th. I have the honor to be, Sir, TTour moat obedient servant, R. Q-. Fountain, Under • Secretary . The Chairman, Education Board.
