AN ALARMONG ACCIDENT.

A recent Melbourne tele^rtiin alluded to the singular freaks of it, bomb-shell, which was fire- tr/mi tho Nelson training-ship, and which played -up -high jjiiks m St. 'Kilda. The "Argus" gives 'the following particulars of* the affair:— An alarming accident ha^penad yesterday afternoon at St. KildU during the progress of the volunteer review. At. about 10 minutes to 3 o'clock, while the naval reserves were at practice on board the Nelson, off Williamstown, an A unexploded shell wan thrown into the western portion of St. Kilda, causing considerable damage, but fortunately injuring no person. The shell, which was distinctly heard as it came whizzing from the bay, alighted just on ther property of Win. Stone, organibuilder m Patterson-street on the westbeach. It smashed through twowooden fences, and then plunged through Mr Stone's workshop, a wooden building detached from his dwelling-house. The damage donehere is estimated at about £20. Theshell then ploughed a furrow m thecentre of the. flat about 7ft. iv length and 6in. deep. It a^ain rose jttiid descended m front of the central entrance to thel^ 'railway station, throwing up a large quantity of road metal. At this point a Chinaman had a very narrow escape and a cabhorse bolted, but was sooij capturedFromthe ground m front of the station the missile passed across G-rey-<! %reet and spentitself on the wall of Mr Douglas Dare, land agent, striking the side-wall about Bft. from the ground, and making a hole of about Bin. m diameter. The affair created a great deal of excitement, mL the neighborhood. An enquiry will bo held by the authorities as to how the shot was so carelessly fired-
