PROVINCIAL DISTRICT NEWS .

Boys do not want' much teaching m the way, of a " lark," but the following from the "Auckland Herald" may be of interest to 'some of them:!— At the top of the Freeman's Bay JEEill, the day . after that of G-uido Fawkes— a saint whose memory is now ceasing to be celebrated"in^the absurd way it used to be— were assembled a knot of larrikins, who had possession m fee simple of a dilapidjated Guy, which had done ser- . vice on the previous day. After a brief consultation they resolved, and waiting till the 'bus came up and passed, they swiftly carried their resolution into action: The Guy was placed on the hindstep of the 'bus with his tall hat nodding gracefully so as to be seen through the glass of the doorway. "Whip behind!" yelled the urchins, and whip behind it was.^But yet Guy "neither spoke not moved." Savage cuts were administered all down the hill, but the unabashed intruder .held on, and, gave no sign, the chorus of yells from the boys exasperating the now angry Jehu. He could stansitno longer, but stopped his vehicle at the foot of the hill, descended from his post, and rushed to the rear only to^see-poor Guido, and tohear the shouts of laughter which accompanied the larrikin war dance on -the hill top. ■ Jehu Was angry, and not only knocked .the figure off the step, but administered sundry kicks to its prostrate body. Then rose from earth'to sky one shriuy scream, and, with dishevelled hair, and garments floating m the wind, a middle-aged "female" (a woman I mean— there arefemaies of other species, although some clever writers don'jb seem to -thin^^io) rufhed^ from an adjacent h*ouse to rescue tile helpless form from the driver, Who wouldHckamanwhenhe was down. She, too, soon saw her. mistake. Tableau ! The good woman said she thought the Guy was a neigh* bor, it was so like him. Pleasant for the neighbor ! . '
