The Manawatu Times. Wednesday; December 5, 1877.

Mr M. Heeney, while manipulating a truck at the Te Matai Mills on Monday, had his arm fractured by the wheel. . We are informed that the vacancy m the Palmersfcon school occasioned by the death of Mr H. W; Wait©, will not be filled until after the Christinas, holidays. • - -, We are sorry to have to announce the death of one ofoMr Blixt's children;, a little boy, from hooping cough. This complaint has been very prevalent of late amongst little children and adults m this district. The suggestion to liberate 600 trout m the vicinity of Jackeytown or Palmgrston was by Mi* J. T. Stewart and' not by Mr Dalrymple. We make this statement because the wording of the public meeting report which appeared m our last is on this point somewhat ambiguous. ..;, Owing to sickness m the Stoney Creekdistrict, Mr Dalrymple, by the advice of the local Committee, has 1 closed the school until after the. Christmas holidays. It is satisfactory to know that the average attendance for the first month was about 20, hut, owing to whooping cough among the children has been reduced io half that number. • Great excitement prevailed among , our townsfolk last Saturday. It appears that Constable GHllespie made a raid upon 'stray animals that morning, and succeeded m impounding nearly 100, got chiefly within the Borough. The haul consisted of .horses cows, and/calves •,; the victims being-- r Mayor, ' councillors, storekeepers, carters, butchers, and dairymen. Such being the case proves that the constable made, no exceptions m this instance, and simply took all that he could legally lay his whip on. This, while augmenting the funds of the Borough, should be a lesson to those who have stray cattle roaming over the district. The examination of the Awahuri School was held on Monday last by Mr Lee, the Inspector. There were 20 scholars present who where examined with' the following result : — Passed m Standard I.— -Alexander Bennett, 200 marks; Henry Bennett, 200 ; Alfred Worsfold, 180 j Charles Lucas, 170; John Wildbore, 155; iFrancis Knight, 155. Passed m. Standard II. — Alexander Bennett, 185 marks; Henry Bennett] 122. This result is highly satis-, factory to the parents and reflects great credit on Mr Menzies, the schoolmaster, who has spared no pains m bringing the children on. The Awahuri School has only been a few months m existance. | A numerously attended meeting was held at the Princess Hotel last Wednesday evening, for the; purpose of arranging for the carrying out of sports on Boxing Day. A committee of management was appointed, and the sum of £18 10s subscribed m the room. Mr Deards is sparing no expense m making preparations for the merry makers: A party of men have been lately employed clearing off stumps, and otherwise preparing the ground for the reception of visitors.' We have not yet seen the programme, but have been, informed that; it promises to be of the most attractive description, inoluding numerous athletic sports, various amusements, and, above all, for the ladies— a baby show! the weather prpve^favorable' we doubt not that a largeinuinber 'of visitor's will befound^n'that day vat Terrace i-Ehd; " BJBNDEE THE S YSTBJt '>• DiSBASE-TBOOI 1 . We earnestly recommend the inhabitants of malarious localities, persons whose occupations are unhealthy or subject them to exposure, m the open air, emigrants to' sections of country recently cleared of timber, travellers and persons of feeble constitution, to protect themselves against the hurtful effects' of sudden climatic changes—airpoison, tainted or' brackish. 7rater, K \ and'intense; heat or cold, by a course of Wolfed Schiedam JuutitAxio SpaaiA^su — Mvt. . ]■':',.':?■ . ...... r -. Holiday News. — Christmas is coming, and those premises lately occupied by Messrs E. & W. H. Brightwell hare been reopened with a fresh stock .of general goods, so that the inhabitants of Terrace End m particular, and the public at large, can purchase their clothing, drapery, boots and shoes, groceries, and fancy goods for presents, cheaper than at any other house m town. It may, also, be stated that boots and shoes are made and. repaired on the premises at low rates. — (Advt.)
