The Manawatu Times. WEDNESDAY, NOVEMBER 14, 1877
We Have received two letters, one sighed "White or Black" and another m vindication I of the ferryman at the Q-brge i Eerr^,xbpth I of which we are compelled to hold over till our next issue. We are also compelled tp hold over pur report '6f 'tHe proceedings of the [Resident Magistrate's Court> held yesterday.- '- : '. '; ■ W .•;,;;•■ ; '' - ! ' ; « ■-■■■ The Foresters of Court Manawatu have ; conic to thef ore m .the matter , of the Indian Eamine: Relief Fund. .TheyJ announce by advertiseiinent elsewhere tnat they will on an early- date give a concert and b^ll m aid of the above object. ; 7 • ■. : _;•...-; The ; November sales of stock-will take^ place at the new market sale yards tomorrow (Thursday). " . ; -.1 A. public' meeting m connection with' the Weßley»n Church Extenßiqh Fund, will be held m the Wesleyan church, on Thursday evening next, at half past seven o'clock. The Revels. Beavin, Simmonds and Lawrey, will address the meeting. Friends throughout the district, who may have any interest m this very important matter, are respectfully requested. to attend. . Our readers will doubtless remember, that the Borough Council applied for certain reserves ■ to be set aside (by the'Qbverriinent) ■ as an endowment for the Borough. ; We are informed that pur member has written" to the Mayor stating that the .Government has granted the request of the Council. This is indeed, a "most important matter for this district as the applied for represent at present considerable value, and m the course of a few years wul" prove "of vast advantage m the way 'of raising a permanent revenue for the town." The bulk of the land comprised m those reserves is available at the paesent, time for occupation, and we doubt not could be readily let at a fair rental if ottered to public competition. . , ? We are informed on good autfibrity, tnat ; a meeting will be held during the present month for the purpose of taking steps to form an Acclimatization .Soc^ty for the district of Manawatu. \Ttie meeting will'be; held m the Public Hall, Palmerston, and will doubtless be well attended by friends of the scheme from all parts the County. This is one of the few things whereon, .people may meet-on-equai terms, as from thY efforts of such a Society, equal benefits are'distributed throughput the whole district. We hope such ' an important matter will receive the sympathy ■ and support of our leading men throughput the Manawatu, and trust that any steps, now taken -may. be /crowned with success. The inauguration of such; a Society wfll dh'ectly benefit the country in' tlie meantime and prove of vast value to future generations. 0 - : T
The English mail closes at the local postoffices to-morrow (Thursday) evening. Last evening we received a telegram EL McNeil Esq., from which we learn that he, m company with the member for Manawatu, had seen the Minister for Public Works, who m response to their representations, promised to place on the Supplementary Estimates the following sums. £300 for Karere road: £1000 for a road between the Munawatu Bridge and Fitzherbert, and £200 for the approaches to the Bridge. In another column appears the Foxton Choral Society's programme of a concert to take place this evening. This is the 2nd concert for the present season, and the programme is of a character to entice a large audience. To-night and oh Thursday nighfc, the Lydia Howarde Opera Bouffe Troupe will appear before a Palmerston audience with what promises to be an excellent programme. The Opera Bouffe is a kind of entertainment not often seen outside of city halls and theatres. The exceptional character of the entertainment, therefore, together with the reputation possessed by the troupe, will doubtless bring together a large audience m the Forestera 1 Hall to enjoy the new sensation. ' ' The Raphael Star Troupe, who have just given a couple of sensational entertainments m Palraerston, will , perform'^in^.fche. Public Hall, Foxton; on Thursday^ , nigh'tl To those who admire feats of dexterity thi3 entertainment possesses^great charms. The skill of the performer;?,: sonj^of tKeiri extremely juvenile, is' 7 indisputable. As well as being wonderful,' a? part of the' performance is- very mirth-provoking, ike entertainment . as a whole, bid's fairly for public patronage. We^desire to call 'pablic ; attention to an important auction : sale ; that will .shortly take place m Wellington, particulars of. which .: will: be ;fouiid m . our ■ advertising . columns. We refer toy the, ;sale ,of ; 325 town sections m the township of Beaconsfield m the Eiwitea Block. ;It is scarcely necessary to state that this is. a new townBhip which has lately been marked off m one of the richest; and most; promising i regions" of the Manawatu. The importance of the Kiwitea Block-' is every day becoming more fully recognised and the work pf.settlement is proceeding f_ with great rapidity. The township that has been laid off has all those advantages as to situation m relation to surrounding country and f other townships |hat create prosperity," so that, we may. look forward to Beaconsfield taking ari"imporiant rank -among the townships of the Manawatu, and that at no distant date.
