RESIDENT MA GISTRATE'S COURT.
FOXTON. (Before E. Ward, Esq.,R.M. ; and E. S. ThynneEsq", J.P.,) , v Babaoh oi the Licensing Act. - Purcell v Pearce: ,There were too informations against . the defendant, to one of which he , pleaded, guilty. He admitted having sold three barrels of beer for sixteen shillings. Prom the evidence it appeared that the defendant was living at,Zairakaw, close tp Douglas and Co.^ saw mills, and, that being of rather lazy habits, he thought he would try sly grog selling, but unfortunately for him the local policeman who was " circumventing round " discovered him in the act of selling beer to a very noisy crowd. v .
The, Magistrate in giving judgment, cautioned the defendant on the course he had." ?been \ pursuing, but said that owing; to the smallness of the amount he had. received for the .'large, amount of liqtior^sold -he would only fine him twenty pounds in ' each case* and costs amounting, to £5 15s 6d. The defendant pleaded poverty and asked for a month to pay; the amoun t of tli e fine, but at the same time paid the costs into Court. - civil cases. Wakeford v. Walsh : Claim, £2 10s. Judgment for plaintiff, £2 10s ; costs, 13s ; solicitor's fee, £1 Is. Ah Qubi v. Wtiyte : Claim, £9 8s 6d. Defendant put in n set-off for £2 10s and paid balance into Court. Judgment for defendant for amount paid into Court and plaintiff to pay further costs, ambtmtirig to 15s, and. 2s for a witness's expense. ; Thompson v. Cook; Claim, £2 10s; Judgment for plaintiff, withOs costs.
