The Melbourne correspondent of the " Daily Times -" is responsible for the following story :— lt is. not long since, the Mayor of Hobart Town sent over a gigantic salmon weighing several, ounces to. a medical man m Melbourne, as* the produce of the Derwent. ' The doctor m question (Dr Beaney); adorned himself with several thousand pounds worth of diamonds, as he usually does on festive occasions, and invited a large number of his friends to banquet off this salmon. " The fish was so admirably cooked, that the docter afterwards presented the cook with an ertreriiely vlauable' gold medal .'" suitably inscribed," as the reporters say, as a fitting memento of the great event. An admirable engraving m the Melbourne Punch of the bediamonded. docter "rising m sta,te, armed with an enormous fish slice and fork to divide a salmon of the proportions of a juvenile sardine, so impressed the *Miiyor of Hobart- Town. that he* has, now sent over two more salmon-to the Mayor of Melbourne. This distinguished Magistrate" repeated the proceedings of the doctor, Bte summoned an illustrious dinner party, at which the genuineness of the two salmon was gravely

discussed. Some of the guests maintained that they were bona fide salmon, -while one of them declared that they were salmon trout. Considering that the Colony had just bought Mr Marshall Wood's replica of Daphne for £1500, he might have waived a scruple and politely assured the Mayoral entertainer that he never tasted more genuine salmon m his life.
