To-mobbow x the burgesses will Be required to choose from the offering candidates three Borough Councillors for

the term now commencing. The gentlemen whose retirement has created the vacancy, are eligible for re-election, and two of "them are again offering their services. The shortness of their stay m office has prevented us from becoming acquainted with either their merits or demerits ; therefore we will say nothing that is m any way calculated to influence the election. But we have heard a whisper of some little rivalry being imported into the Council, by and between the representatives from the two ends of the town. We trust the councillors will have the sense to crush anything of this kind at the outset. There is nothing that will impair their usefulness, or bring their office into contempt, so much as the presence of local jealousies m the Council room. If such jealousies exist m or out of the . Council, they exist unnecessarily. There is not theleast occasion for the representatives from one end of the town to pit themselves against those from the other, since while the Borough is not divided into Wards every Councillor should feel himself to represent, not a "portion, but the whole of the Borough, and if he lays himself out to compass any but the most equitable distribution of Borough funds, he is assuredly unfit to occupy the position of Councillor. We have "notas'yet seen any exhibition of this Guelph and Ghibelline spirit among either the Councillors or ratepayers, but if the rumour that gives it existence be true, we trust that for the credit of our Municipal regime a word to the wise will be enough.
