Avery successful trial of the new fish torpedo invented m Melbourne— the Brennan' torpedo, as.it. has been named — was (says the " Argus ") made m the Bay. The trial was to have taken place m the morning, m the presence of Colonel Scratchley ; bat m consequence of his leaving by the mail steamer, he was unable to be present. After the Avoca had left, however, Captain Mande- ; ville and Lieutenant Tandy of the Cerberus, Captains Stubbs, Snee, and Bull proceeded to a steam-launch moored m the bay, whence the trial was to he . made. As there was a strong current running from down the Yarra, | it was decided to fully test the value" of the ] invention, and" the torpedo was accordingly launched across .the current. It fully answered all expectations, as it was steered straight across the tide, and . was yeere4 m all directions with the greatest ease.
