The weather for some time past has been .- very unsettled, and on Wednesday evening a. severe thunderstorm visited the district. Yesterday, however, was beautifully fine, so fine indeed that it may be looked upon as ushering m the .welcome season of Spring. It was reported yesterday that there was a fall of snow m Palmerston during some part of the previQus* night. However true this may be, the hills m the Gorge direction were unmistakably observed to be draped with the feathery mantle. The appointment of the present Mayor, G. M. Snelson, Esq., as Justice of the Peace, , is notified m a late Gazette. His accession to this position is a matter for gratulation not only for himself but for the many who will be convenienced by having a Magistrate so close at hand. We are informed that the evangelistic service that is to be conducted by the Revs. Hammond and McGregor, m Palmerston, is definitely fixed for Sunday the 16th_nst, and will be heid m the Public Hall. Their enterprise is one that should be sympathised with by all right minded people, since m this as m other places there is ample room for evangelistic aggression. , The finding of -the • Commission m reference to the allegations made against .the separation of the Kiwitea and Manchester Ridings from the Manawatu County was as follows :- — l.'The Court finds tlie signatures to the petition are not false. 2. That some of the persons signing the petition were not entitled to sign. 3. That the petition was signed by not less than three-fifths of the County Electors for the Ridings comprised within the proposed new .County of Kiwitea. It will be seen by advertisement m our present issue that three of the Palmerston Borough Councillors retire, and. that the election of three' Councillors m the room. of the retiring ones will be held on tbe 13th inst., m the Public Hall. The retiring councillors are of course eligible for re-election. Nominations of candidates will be received by the Returning Officer/, from whom forms, of nomination may be obtained, up to noon of Saturday next, the Bth inst. ' The Wanganui Exhibition closed on Thursday night last, after being open to the public for eleven days. Those who visited it from this district speak of it m very decided terms of praise. Indeed the universal verdict is that the Exhibition was" above expectation successful. We are pleased that our Wanganui friends have made such a capital beginning. The effect of this their I great enterprise m- stimulating industry of every kind cannot be well exaggerated. We trust that next year this" rapidly developing district of Manawatu .will be well represented m more than one department of the .Exhibition.
