August 23. As there are six thousand separate applications for shares m the Union Insurance Company, it will take five or , six weeks to allot the shares. , August 24. A preliminary meeting was held last night to form a bycicle club. It does not promise to be a great success. At a meeting of the residents m the Ashbnrton district resolutions were carried to the effect that — " The new railway tariff is unduly oppressive ; that a Resident Magistrate should be appointed for the district ; that immediate redistribution of seats should be made on the basis _of. population." '
