' He, replied to^many attacks made on publican's and Licensing Benches, and supported a compensation clause, Mr Hursthouse supported the Bill, and opposed compensation. Mr Lumsden objected to those who could not trust themselves, dictating; to him. He , strongly protested against the circulars issued to members fry Good Templars. Clubs, libraries, Wcturesr r &c, were more,* efficacious remedies thSn the Bill for intemperande. , De' Latour m erring to the Good Templar circulars, said the unfortunate 'zeal of, a few,- prejudiced a good' cause. ;He> thought Local Option should be equal to" either,* grant or refuse licenses. If compensation was due \i should be paid from license fees. Murray Aynsley oppose 4 the Bill generally. He strongly insisted thai the compensation money for it should be raised by a local rate. * Pyke refused to recognise the- claim > for compensation. Prohibiting simply encouraged sly grog selling. The education of the young was the real remedy for intemperance. t Attention should be directed to adulteration. Commissioners should be able to promise licenses j on production of plans of buildings erected on- the chance of gettinga licenseGabb's supported the principle, but notthe details of the Bill. '" Bryce thought, the Bill should only apply to- new houses. Wood (Mataura) objected to the details of the Bill. Teschnaaker opposed the Bill and supported compensation m. the case of established houses.
