Coote) of the Manawatu County Council, has appointed the 10th of September as the day for electing a Councillor for " the Awahuri Riding,'* this seat having become- vacant through the resignation of Mr J. W. Liddell. Nominations will be received at the Court-House Foxton, on the Ist September, up to 12 o'clock noon-. . -„ A little girl'the daughter of Mr B. Pepper, , saddler, Palmerston, had a narrow escape from drowning on- Thursday last. It appears that whilst- Mr Pepper was engaged reparing a room m the upper part of his house, he was- alarmed by hearing screams proceeding from the rear of his premises. He hastened down, and discovered that one of his children had fallen into the well. He wa3 immediately lowered into,, the well by,' some friends, whahad by this time aseembled, and the child was rescued, just as it was on the point of sinking. Beyond the fright and wetting, we "are glad to say the child/ was none the ,worse for its adventure, , A curious, accident happened whilst the mob of cattle belonging to Messrs. Russell and Enderly ■ wWe- passing through the

Forty-mile Bush. It appears that one of the animals charged a driver, knocking him and bis horse completely over ; the man waß stunned and lay insensible f of a short time. Upon bis recovering, he was surprised to find the beast lying dead close to him, having broken its neck m the chafge. •The horse escaped uninjured. We beg to remind our readers that the Coneerl- m aid- of the Wesleyan... Church, takes place next Tuesday/ the 28th inst., at the Public Hall, Palmerston. Owing to the late hour at which we re- ' ceived the report 1 of ' the Foxton Resident Magistrate's Court, it is unavoidably Held over until our next issue. On Thursday! morning about 10 o'clock a Mr Williams, a< farrier employed m the stables attached to Mr Roe's Palmerston 'Hotel, saw smoke issuing from a'house/next to the Hotel, and upon his going over to the place be found one ( ol the r 7 rooms on fire, he immediately went to work, and after some little time, during which,, he^ got t slightly iburntj succeeded m extinguishing^e^flames. It appears that the:: house m question was formerly occupied by a man named' Jones* but' who hastlatelyr left, since then the;doors - haye 1 ' been unlocked 'and ' the' supposition is r tiiafc' it* was accidently set-W'flre by 'some one using xt us a place to sldep ifi." v We call attention' 'to' tne rr fact, this^ (Saturday) is the last day of, Mr J.iß.Ham-' (ilton's >Great , Sale qf. ( General ~- t l)rapery, so that infending purchasers may not miss this last opportunity. We 'have - 'recsntlv had the pleasure of seeing several photographs, taken by Caney &v Co., of Paimerston^; } thejr ,are perfect specimens of the art, the enamelled jones m particular being especially beautiful. Mr "Candy has bad many, "years experience,- and we recommend those who. wish to obtain a good, likeness of themselves to pay him a Ti ?i fr - / !i - ' v 'j J "A '• We have received the Schedule of Regula-, tions of the' Australian Juvenile Industrial ? Exhibition/ which is to be opened, at Bal- | larat on the 15th February, 1 1878, and shall i ( r be pleased to' show it to anyone taking an | .interest m the movement.' "' ' I ■ The Tasmanian cable is now repaired, and telegraphic .messages can he sent as usual. • The." Times " says .the", Waka Maori" -| libel case is set down for bearing „at the , Supreme Court on the 27th instant. From Aucklaud we '("Times") - learn that . the survey of the Thames and Waikato line is , rapidly progressing, and if the fine weather' J 'should hold out it. will be finished m less ' than ajmontb's time. -' The New .Zealand S.S. Co. .have purchased the smart little steamer .Jane ,Douglas— a sister vessel to the Tvi — now running m the * Napier and Poverty Bay trade. The Jane' "Douglas is expected down hejein.. r db.out a week, 'and will be placed m the trade be- > tweeh Wellington, Rangitikei, and Manawatu.—" Evening Post." The- ""Wanganuiv Herald" says : — An attempt is being made" to float a Wanganui and Rangitikei Steam Navigation Company.^ A liberal support is being' offered, and. we trust m a few days to be able to put the prpspectus fairly, before the public. That a suitable steamer, energetically and econ.v omically managed, would pay a handsome dividend, as well as confer 'substantial benefit upon the business community 'generally r we have no doubt whatever. • - , rr The "Times," wnich, after a certain amount of hesitation, adoptecl finally, with a certain enthusiasm, the cause of Vivisection and all that is contained under, that name, made a proposal ,on Wednesday to set on foot a systematic investigation of the remedies for the disease which causes madness m .dogs, by the hopeful process of inducing it, through artificial inoculation m healthy specimens — the only methoil, as the- writer - of the article assures' the public, that can ever produce any 'satisfactory result m the way of prevention or cure. When a professor of the healing art sets about 'his work < by infecting the healthy with' a frightful disease, and moreover, dogmatically asserts that this certain addition to the misery of the world affords the only hope' of alleviating it, we cannot help asking why, if it be the only method with, dogs, it is not also the only method .with men? Experiments m the inoculation of serious disease arc -never tried — openly or confessedly, at least — with human beings, and yet the medical profes: sion do not assure us that they have no hope of ever adding to the number of remedies at their command. We believe the truth to be that the Government experiments on inoculation with cholera poison and other such diseases, though they have yielded some valuable results m the way of warning — with respect to the avenues of contagion, and so forth — have hardly m any instance as yet yielded bo much as one valuable remedy. It is most probable;that if the experiments proposed for the inoculation of rabies take place they will result m yielding a good number of wretched" patients but no cures.* The enthusiasts for 'vivisection seem to think that, with tbelowe^" animals at least, if you make them jump in--, to'a quick-set bush, and scratch out both their eyes, you are quite sure to discover how to make them jump into tbe quick-set bosh, .and scratch them m again. That, however, was only the sanguine endeavour, notxttig achievement, of tbe wise " man of Thessaly" who'first set that valuable example. ■ Nothing is so soothing as a sister's love and sympathy. Every young , man. ought to have a sister's smiles to. encourage him. If you have not got a sister of your^own, you may be able to borrow one somewhere m the neighbourhood. '
