TO THE EDITOB. Sir* — Your .Carnarvon Correspondent done more than honor 'Hhe . I*eildio% correspondents to the various papers re separation, with a reading of- ■ their'different accounts and opinions." He gives them a prominent notice, m your last Saturday's issue, and as his letter is written m a more temperate tone when touching on personalities than any other of the newspaper correspond- / ents ,who had previously written m opposition to separation, - 1 think the error - he has made ia quoting the "New Zea- . land .Times' "'Correspondent, nrtfstbave been quite unintentional. It is a great pity that your anti-separation correspondent and other agitators cannot discuss the question on its merits, without dragging into view their personal dis- . likes. It is mere silly twaddle to say, as . your correspondent does, that the new County Council would be composed of the servants of an absent corporation. • Considering the stake m the new county that the Corporation and some of its, agents would have, it would be unreasonable to prevent one or two of its agents having a seat m the new County - Council ; as at most it would be only one ' or two seats m a council of nine members of independent settlers, elected by -600 voters. And. as for the^power of the Corporation m the new Council, let me tell your correspondent that it is a mere bugbear to frighten people with, who do not know anything about the matter. The County will be divided into rid- . ings, and there are several settlers m the district, each one of whom will be able to give as many votes m one riding its the agent of the Corporation can do. "Where then is the corporation power that is used by the anti-separation party, to frighten political babies with. There are, 60(3 electors m the new county, and

some half dozen of their number will be able to put tote the Corporation, but if the electors will place .power into the hands 6f any of the agents of the Corporation it will be only because those elected will possess the : confidence of the voters, for doing the 1 best' they can for the cbmmoi interest of the whole district or ridings they may be chosen to represeM/ -I bad no intention of saying the ftbpye'. "when. IcGn/meneed to wiite /this, ..'but- rather to compliment yourCarnftTjon Cprrespoiident for being themostteniperati& writer that has yet appeared on the sanie side of the question he has written ,pnV but I have to comJjlain of his mis-quoting the " New Zeaand'Tinies''^Correspondent, who has not ventured on drawing any comparison whatever between the "official capacity " of the Chairman of the Manavratu County Council and that Pf another gentleman. I would ask your Carnarvon Correspondent to read the letter again to,, see if " greater, official experience '- were not the terms used ? The meaning to be attached to the term ■.-" experience "must .be .very different' from " capacity. "' ; The capacity of the County Council Chairman was never called m question by the r " New Zealand Times' " Cprrespondent.-^I am, &c<, ■ ;:;;.:■■;:,■/;.,.:..;;._.,, ■;'; v ; FBlli6lN,(a, CoKRB^i'ONDBNT.
