August 17.A crowded ' meeting of citizens, the Mayor m the chair, passed three resolutions unanimously, the purport of-which was that the attention of the Government be drawn to. the state of trade, and-that they ought to adopt the resolutions Sissed by the Canterbury Provincial ouncil, 1871, yi'z. :— " That m the. opinion of this Council, it is desirablethat Railway and other jjlant or material should be obtained within the province, when this can' be done at a cost, not exceeding ten per cent, above that at which the same can be imported, and thai public tenders be invited for the same. Also that importing what can be produced within the colony is injurious to the interests of the colony."
