The Manawatu Times. SATURDAY, AUGUST 11, 1877.

Otf Wednesday last Palmerston donned its holiday attire, and became excessively lively and gay. Towards the closebf the day especially the public-houses seemed to empty themselves into the streets. Throngs of people were moving to and fro, and numerous vehicles flashed about m the afternoon sun-light. The court house was the point of *attraction, for there the important work of polling was going on. Fourteen candidates were m. the field for municipal honours, and everybody knew that as vehicle after vehicle deposited its burthen of voters at the courthouse,, the wavelets of popular 6 wiil were floating some of the aspirants safely into the niche of honour while others were being left m the shallows of disappointment. The friends of the different candidates manfully exerted' themselves" during the day, and as evening approached the interest waxed iuto something like excitement. At about 8.30 the Returning OfliceE, Mr R. N. Keeling, took his seat.on the rostrum and announced the numbers as follow : — Abrahams 37, Deards 43, Gilbert '57, Jenssen 72, Lmton 74, Manson ft), Marsh 45, Owen 53, Phillips 32, Roe 27, Summerhays 68, Trimble 28, Venn 24, Walton 58. The following gentleman were therefore declared to be elected : — -Messrs. Linton Jenssen, Manson, Summerhays, Walton, Gilbert, Owen, Marsh, Deards. The announcement' was greeted with prolonged applause.. The successful candidates then came forward one after another and m appropriate speeches, returned thanks fpr the position of honour m , which they were placed. Mr Abrahams returned thanks to the Bupporters of the unsuccessful candi--1 dates, and expressed himself as satisfied with the selection the burgesses had made. ; ' Mr -Lintoir moved a "vote of thanks to the Returning Officer, which that gentleman suitably responded to: This terminated the proceedings.
