BALCLUTHA.
An inquest into tKe deaths of Mrs. Cheeseman, who died suddenly late on Thursday, night; wa&held.by Dr. Smith and a jury this afternoon. The evidence sHbwedtnat bofli the husband and the wife were the worse for drink. The husband struck her, repeatedly witii his fist, one blow behind the ear. Drsi Brown and Ferguson made a post morte.m.examihation, and gave it as their opinion that death restated frpin' the blow referred to. The jury returned -a verdict "of manslaughter against James Cheese-
man, the husband of the deceased. The prisoner was committed for trial at the next sittings of the Supreme Court, bail being accepted, the accused m £100, and two sureties of £50 each. The deceased leaves eight children under ten years of age. Steps are being taken to have them sent to the Industrial School m Dunedin.
