CARNARVON.
pProm oiirown Correspondent:] ' -' Although. Carnarvon is a somewhat out of the way : corner in. K.ltf.'s do- ■ minion of N.Z., and though not;; perhaps m a position like , its neighbors at Sandonand Fpxton, to be able to boast "of a large population, it is neyertheless no insignificant district. The comparatively few settlers .m it are, wi^itheexception of a small part, all larg^landholders, and therefore must represent no " small item m the value of Carnarvon. ;Of course Ido not for one moment mean ■ tosay that; it (our district) : is 1 , more valuable on that account ; onthe con- , traryy it is to be deplored that so large and fine a . district should be m the hands of so few. But be this as it may ~ it is not the point I wish to deal with. " pWhat I want to;say 'is,- that Carnarvon has not been fairly treated by the Press generally, and permit me to say, by the local papers, particularly. Although as - I have said before, " it is a thinly populated district ; if is, nevertheless, or at least should be, pfc sufficient importantance to newspaper men, both politically and socially. ■■■ '■; ,;.'■- ■; , • : TSow, while the County separation question is causing a good deal of thought and talk m -other parts 'of the Manawatu County, we hear little of the opinion of others, and they hear nothing of what owr opinion is on that question. I do not mean to go into the matter be- ; yond saying that it . is ,a great pity the separation should be allowed to be ; asked .for witilout Ifany : stir whatever ibeing made to oppose, and . "more especially when: the gerieral opiniion is, "keep" the County whole." It • is true, a .few gentlemen have made some effort to oppose the separation movement, but met with poor encouragement. It has very; much the look as though every one Waited to see what so and so would_do; there seems to be a' good deal of despotism m" petty politics. This should not be, let every one as- , sert bis right to his bpuiion, and if the separation : is reaUy opposed .to most,: then let them come forward m protest of the same,: and also demand from the "'"% "Council "justice to be done to Feild-f \ ingi and so leave no plea to that part i of the County to separate.- Peilding H, undoubtedly hag reasbnu^or complaint^
fend the County Council by its onesided actions, is 'the cause, as anyone who has at all taken notice of their prp-' ceedings could not fail to see. Now it is just possible, should no ' monster petition be presented to Parlia^ ment, separation will be granted; and j once granted, it is not likely that it ever will be undone ; and again, Foxton may look on it- m this way; ."well, • its a pity, but i^s perhaps as well to get rid of them, let them go ;" and so may reason Sandoni at the same, time quite forgetingj that the allowing of-separa-tion does nibre to thwart the railway m project than perhaps: anything else could, to say nothingof the weakening of the whole County. . I have said inbre than I intended on • this question. It is one .which has created- great interest here, so that to touch it involuntarily call^ forth more than, an ordinary remark. The reasons against are so many, and those for so few, that it seems really a strange thing no one cares to-trouble about it; surely, to preserve the unity of the County is to us of importance ? Why not. then let us maintain it ? " ". If by a single motion, Feilding. was unjustly treated, let the Council rescind such resolution, and 1 give them justice- '" thereby rectifying matters. . j
