July 12. < " In the Assembly last night the question of the Pacific Mail Service cropped up. Mr Parkes acknowledged the ex- - tremely unsatisfactory position m which the service stood, and thought a^better arrangement might have been made by the late Government. The present Gpvernment found they must either let the service drop altogether, or adopt the course into -which the late Postmaster^ • General had practically 'forced them. The Government had done all that was possible under the circumstances, but he admitted that the present arrangements were' not at all satisfactory.
