MANAWATU HIGHWAY BOARD.

t A meeting of the rabove Board was held .on Monday, the 25th June. I i MEMBEBS PBESENT. Messrs. McNeil (Chairman), Dal* > rymplej McEweivancL M6Pherson. .The minu,tes of the previous meeting were read, and *on r the 'motion of Mr McEwen, seconded- by Mr Dalrymple, confirmed. '•£ It was proposed by Mr McEwen, and ! seconded DyjMr^ Dalrymple^ that a rate of ( nine pence m the ponnd sterling be struck' for the nine months commencing July Ist; 1877,. and ending 31st March, 1878. Carried. ,- r , • „ ' ' 'MrCawson and Douglas & Co. waited 'upon the 'meeting "for the purpose of 'trying to arrange for the construction of aboutsix miles of roads' running through " the Douglas estate, and'opening up the proposed special settlement. He offered Co bear one half of the cost. , i ( A letter from Mr Gower, of the Larkwof thy estate, advocating the construction of the same roads, was read. °' Resolved,-— That the Inspector of Works Tisit the road, line for the purtpose of forming an estimate of the cost of the proposed work, and lay particulars before tEe next meeting. Letter from Bergersen & Co., contractors, asking for one months' extension of time for Anderson's cutting. Granted. ,* A similar application was received * from Mr Leonard, for tiis contract on M&lners's line, Carnarvon,, whidh was _ granted. The Secretary was instructed to again bring under the notice of "the Minister for Public Works, the present state of > the road between Oroua and Carnarvon Junction, and to point out that a plate* layer's cottage has just been erected on ~ ■the roadway. t c, likewise to write to the proper authorities and request that the road running past Mr Dalrymple 's shall be continued^ through the Ti WiONative Reserve, " l until opposite., the road laid ,ofEon the) south side of the' -Mahawatu river. , The Inspector of 'Works was instructed to arrange for. the construction of a bridge across i the -drain opposite Me* Ewen'sline,>(Karere. <■ i•■ __ • < In reply to a circular jfrt^the Colonial Secretary's, office, asking for sug- ♦> gestions from the Board, tending to improve the present Boad 'Board laws. '• i ■'The 'following ,were read by Mr Dalrymple,' and ordered to be forwarded to the Colonial Secretary : — - - 1. That the construction and maintenance of all roads m the district be entirely left m the hands of the Highway Boards, instead of being divided as at present between the Boards and County' Council. ( '' 2. That the Valuation of the district be triennial instead of annual ; and that^' an acreage rate_be substituted for the present system, but not necessarily uni- j form," the; Board hawgithe power to | classify the r various qualities of land! within the district. * ' I 3.
