We learn that the petition recently sent m by the residents of this township praying that Palmerston North be formed into a municipality has been grafted. We-un-derstand that Mr Warburton received a telegram on Thursday last^ 'notifying the feet. _ J Mr Q-. M. Snelson will offer for sale today (Saturday) at 12 o'clock noon, at the Peoples' Auction Mart, the balance of the Stock-in-trade m the estate' of ( E. and W. H. Brightwell. The auction sale of timber at theyardß' of the Hokowbitu Saw Mill Co. -will be held on Monday next by Mr G-. M. Snelson. Printed catalogues may be'jpbtained from Mr Suimnerhays,' the Manager, or from the auctioneer.

We have repeatedly called attention to the dangerous state of that part of our main road that lies between the Railway Station and the crossing at Nees' Mill. Only a few days ago a spring cart was precipitated into the very large ditch near the* Princess Hotel, and although no actual 'injury was sustained, yet, td say the least, it seems wrong that such a thing can happen m the main thoroughfare of the township. We have many times urged the neccessityof these formidable f : excavations being;: tilled up, and we'are' again requested to? draw the attention of the authorities to their neglect of duty-in allowing-them to" remain month after month ' to 'the great danger of the public. . ...-. •.,.„. A numerously signed petition has been forwarded to Mr Moniet, to be by 5 that : gentleman handed to the head of the Railway Department, praying that a fourthclass station 'may, r be erected at the Terrace End of the town. There is at present a bare platform; at which the train stops byi signal, but as this was only intended for a timber loading platform, no 'shelter of any kind has been provided, and 'the consequence is that any passengers wishing to avail themselves of the train at tbis place have to walk nearly to the last crossing on the Napier road, and if it is raining stand, out m the ■wet until. the arrival of the, train. . The outlay necessary for the erection of a station of this class is not, large, and as the convenience, of the .travelling community of, this, fast increasing part of the township would be ensured thereby, we trust that the 'Minister for Public Works will see fit to 'grant the prayer of the petitioners. A rat'hef unusual scene occurred m a-'cer-tain shop m this - city to-day. , About ll o'clock a fascinating 'young lady entered the shop, and as trade was not; brlgh't^ several of the assistants 'were' soon at hand and ready to serve her. There 'were three' of these young gentlemen and each bne wanted to have the honor of 'waiting on the lady. Not one of the three would give way to the others, and after jsome hot words had been exchanged they came to blows. Then there, "was, a free fight, and it required all the influence and power of the proprietor of the .., shop to separate the combatants. The result of the affair was that^one of the shopmen went home with a black eye, and it is probable that the' Resident Magistrate will 'be appealed to. I—-"1 — -" Argus." The Rational Public ,is ,not to be convinced by mere assertion, 'it wants proof. Accordingly when it ' learns that four thousand physicians guarantee the purity and efficacy of 'an alcoholic invigorant, and see on every>'hand its wonderful cures of nervous *j< debility, t kidney and' bladder ailments, rheumatism,' indigestion and 'torpidity, v of the Hverj the -public puts its entire iaith m the article. The above explains why v TJdoipho Womb's Schiedam Abojtatig Schnapps enjoy .such unbounded -xinpi?'!"."^ , ,__! - * '
