June 30. The Loan and Mercantile Agency report under date, London, June 27 — Wool market unchanged. Sales closed firmly, and comprised about 268,000 bales', 145,000 having been taken for the Continent. 5,5,000 bales are held for future disposal, and -5,000 taken for America. A good many second-hand parcels offered during the past sales. Tuesday. The Grand Jury found no Bill m the ease of Sillsden against Powell for criminal libel. A great deal of discussion. took place last night at the conference for the suppression of intemperance, but an ..adjournment till Monday next took place without any result being arrived at, though the following motion was proposed : — " That this conference, approves and re.commends the main principles of the Local Option Bill." The speeches were very moderate m tone, but , considerable diversity of , opiiion prevailed. -
The Grand Jury made presentments to tho effect that there was no legal provision existing m the district for keeping an official record of brands and descriptions of cattle slaughtered by butchers, and the want of such record led to difficulty m tracing" cattle and miscarriage of justice. The Jury also drew attention to the miserable Court accomodation provided. The Chief Justice promised to forward them to the proper quarter. In the Supreme Court to-day, m the perjury case arising out of the Ocean Mail disaster at the Chathams. Mr Travers gave notice of his intention to demur to the indictment on the ground of informality of proceedings at the Chatham Islands. Joseph Burgess, for stealing a watch, was senteuced*to 12 . months' imprisonment ; Matthew Scan, stealing money frpm a boarding house, 12" months ; Frederick Lyman, stealing a pair of boots, 2 years — two previous . convictions were proved against him : James Kerr, wife beating, 12 months j E. R. Walter, stealing a cash-box, 12 months ; Geo. Morris, stealing from a Chinaman, 12 months. The Tui sailed for Foxton" at 5 p.m., No passengers. * The Mail Steamer Australia, arrived at San Francisco on the 28th June. She left Auckland on the 6th ultimo. .' G-eorge Beefcham was elected at Featherston, to-day,unopposedas M. H.-R.,, vice J. C. Andrews, resigned. '
