The- s. s. Napier left Wellington for Foxton on Monday evening, and will leave Foxton for Wellington this (Wednesday) afternoon. We have, been, favored with the second number of the "The Teacher," an educational monthly serial published by Messrs M'Kinley, of Melbourne. It is undoubtedly the most pretentious and best produced educational paper m the colonies, and is deserving of a' wide circulation among those -who areinterestedinthe speciality it affects. It is important that every profession should have an organ both for expressing the views of individual members, and -for systematically" upholding the rights and privileges of the profession generally. A well used instrument of the kind bespeaks an advanced condition, of the class it represents. At this time, wheri; the future of education m New Zealand, is upon its trial it behoves every teacher who has children to teach, and every parent who has a child to be taught or a vote to give to avail himself of every source I of information that may guide his solitary conscience m this important question. In ' the absence of an educational paper m New Zealand we can recommend "The Teacher " as a valuable exponent of principles which should be more generally known, because they affect not only the interests of the teacher and the taught, .but also the relationship m which the education body stand to the community generally.-

It is stated upon good authority that one oi' more burglars have been prowling about Palmerston during the past week. A'resi-' dent informed us on Saturday that be had been disturbed once or twice during the small hours of that morning by hearing some noise at the front door of his house, but not suspecting anything wrong he did not get up to ascertain the cause. On attempting to open the door later m the day it was found almost impossible to turn the key. However, this was with some difficulty accomplished, and when withdrawn from the locl^it was found that the wardh oles of the key were bent close together, and it was scraped bright m places as if it had been laid hold of with, some Bharppointed iron or steel instrument with a view of turning it m the lock previous to pushing it m upon the floor. We would advise householders to be on their guard, and where practicable use bolts m addition to the ordinary locks. The traffic is again stopped 'at the Lower Ferry, Manawatu Q-orge. , While the Na-- ' pier coach was crossing on Friday last, the wire became so strained as to jamb m the gui, causing the punt to come to a stand-still-in the middle of the river. Seeing the „ dilemma, and with, but little room to : work, "having three horses and five passengers besides the driver and ferry hands, the ferry? man; goktwo lines ashore, cast off from the . wire altogether, and swung the punt into the bank, giving all a safe landing. We 'hear' that a new wire has been ordered^ but umSil that arrives it will be impossible to , cross : any vehicles,' as there is only a small boatito do all the work with. We trust the Council will speedily supply the necessary material, and hope soon to be able' to chronicle the resumption of traffic. We are pleased to announce what will be an item of good news to the- residents of Palmerston and Feilding, and m fact to all our up-country settlers. The Railway Manager has authorized us to say that all rates will be lowered on the Ist of next month. We are not yet m a position to state the extent of the reduction to be made, but hope that it will be > considerable, and that one of its immediate effects will be to largely increase the : traffic upon our lines, and so prove to the railway authorities and the Government that cheap fares and freights mean increased .prosperity to upcountry settlers,- and, as a natural consequence, an increase of profit to the Railway Department. ■''■'.'. "'■--.. -\ . It is notified by advertisements iii our present issue that Mr S. Garroll,.of'Weiling- . ton, certificated accountant m Bankruptcy, has been appointed.. Creditors' Trustee m the estate of Thomas Cooky Junior, of Fox,ton ; and that a meeting of creditors m the estate of -Robert Stanley, of v the Lower Ferry, will be held at the office of Mr R. N. Keeling, Palmerston North, on Tuesday, the 26th instant. We direct attention to an advertisement m another column announcing a grand. Art Union, which is to be held on an early date. The- chief prize m this Art Union consists of a brick-built house and section of ground. The other chances or prizes are sixteen m number, and consist of sums 'of money, the highest being £10, which, is to be paid to the drawer of the lowest number by the lucky winner of the house. Written tenders are invited m this issue for the erection of a fifth-class station master's house, at Feilding station. Tenders ' must be addressed to J. T. Stewart, Esq.) Public Works Office, Foxton, and specifications may be seen at Feilding Station, and at the Public Works Offices, Palmerston and 'Foxton. We notice by advertisement m another column that the partnership hitherto existing between Mr R. Mackie and Mr J. C. Aubert, of this township, was dissolved on the 14th instant, by mutual consent. Mr Mackie will receive all monies owing to the late firm, and will discharge its liabilities. .■Mr E. S. Thynne will sell to-morrow (Thursday), at the farm of Mr C. Parker, Motoa, a valuable lot of stock, &c.' Lunch, provided. We are compelled to . hold over several letters, and other interesting matter.
