May 25. This morning, Thomas" Brown, on remand for stealing a watch from Duncan's store, hanged himself atthe gaol. Hetook the opportunity at breakfast time to remainbehind m the cell for a few minutes, and got a piece of rope used to tie bedding, which he fixed over the door, got a footstool, took off his boots, and kicked the stool away. Five minutes afterwards, the warder missing him, went m search, and found him dead. An inquest will be held to-morrow. May 26. At a meeting of the creditors of James O' Shea .this morning, Schultze declined to guarantee 7s. 6d. m the pound— ss. down and 2s. 6d. secured by deed of conveyance of property settled, on the debtor's wife, to which solicitor advised that no legal title could be obtained. It was resolved by a large majority that O'Shea- should file a declaration pf bankruptcy-. The Georgia Ministrels ' opened to a ■ crowded house last night. • The insurance companies promptly paid all claims to Mr Caselburg for losses sustained by the late fire at Masterton, amounting' to about x £8,000. Caselburg estimates his loss at some £5,000 over insurances. - Tuesday. The City Council to-day, after a long discussion-re wharf tenders,. resolved to accept the tender of McKirdy, of Wellington. It was also resolved to give three months' notice to the Council Engineer, and some other officials and advertise for Engineer at a salary of £500. •
