THE WANGANUI AND MANAWATU RAILWAY.

. f" Eyeiiing ATgus.") vanced that the laying of the permanent way might easily be proceeded with, but we believe that although a large quantity of rails are ready, there are no sleepers, and, so far as it is known, no steps have been taken to procure them. So little anxiety do the Government show to get these sections completed, and the line opened from Wanganui to Foxton, that the contractors have not only riot been offered any inducement to get the line completed within contract time, but are actually m doubt whether, if they do so complete it, the Government' will be prepared to take it off their hands until the- contract time is up. There can scarcely be a doubt that this line would prove a very paying one if opened up the full'length, and as little that the section between Wanganui and Turakina will involve a loss while worked by itself. The whole line could be completed m six or eight months with ease if the Government "would' show m a practical, manner the anxiety which Mr McLean professes. .
