A lecture on the temperance question was delivered m the Schoolhouse, atEeilding, on last Monday evening by the Hon W. 'Fox,' who is the President of the Tending Temperance Society. The meeting was largely attended by an attentive audience. We trust that we shall be able to furnish at least a summary of Mr -Fojc's lecture m our nextjtesue. By advertisement m our present issue 6he Chairman of the Manawatu County Council proclaims that portion of the main line, of road from the turning m; of the beach to the South of the Ofcaki Kiver as far as the inland ford, and from thence to. and through the township of Hadfield to the beach on tho Norl^h of the Otaki JEtiyer, to bo a Comity road.
It will be remembered that sometime since the Manawatu County Council authorised the survey of the proposed line of railway between Sandon find the Carnarvon junction on the Foxton to Manawatu line. We are informed that the surrey of this line is now finished, and as the country through which it passes is very level, and the construction of a railway npon it will not necessitate a large outlay of capital, we trust that there is now a fair prospect of the Sandon and Carnarvon pettlerrs being speedily connected by rail with Foxton. A Native meeting, which was largely attended by members from tbe various tribes m the Manawatu district, was held at Awahuri yesterday. Mr Booth, Native judge, Mr Young, interpreter, and Mr Grace, of the Native Office, were present on the occasion. .We Understand that the utmost harmony pre vailed during the meeting, and that to-day (Wednesday) a sum of £4,500, the amount duo upon the block, will be paid to the Native 3. We have received the second number of the "N.Z. Country Journal," and can recommend it to all coricerned m agricultural or pastoral pursuits. We doubt not that such would regard it as an indispensable did they once become acquainted with its merits.. It is a serial production, each number of which contains about 70 pages, which are replete with valuable information both original and extracted. The light that modern science throws upon the .'matters dealt with is fairly reflected from its pages. The pamphlet is ci*editable to all concerned m its production. It is published by G. A. Makeig, Chrisichuvch. By. a recent telegram we learn that at a meeting of the Auckland branch of the the British and Foreign Bible/ Society* it was reported that the total issues during the year were 2,748, being an increase of 25 per cent over last year; collections) £176 19s; balance m hand, £2 3s. We learn with satisfaction that a Savings Bank and Money Order office wero opened at Feilding on Thursday last. By the " New Zealand- Gazette " just to hand, we learn that the name of Mr William Stone, has been registered -in the Colonial Secretary's office, at Wellington, as General Manager for the railway from Wellington to the Manawatu Gorge. . Natives are said by the "Patea Mail" to be now offering a block of land to Government, which lies between the confiscated line and the Patea River, inland of the Wareroa and Mokoia Reserves. It is reported to be level forest land. The "Herald" learns that Mr Booth, who has just returned from the Tuhua country, has succeeded m completing the purchase "of 20,000 acres of land to the westward of Tongariro. The land is of good quality, much of it being favorable for small farm settlement. The besfc road to it would be from Wanganui by Murimotu, and hence an additional reason exists for pushing forward the constructiou cf a road to the plains. The "Wanganui Herald of Saturday says : — The proceedings at the meeting of creditors of Henry Fletcher, tobacconist of the Avenue, held this day at the Court-house, discloses a style of business that cannot too strongly be condemned. It appears that Fletcher commenced trading about two months ago, according to his- own evidence, without a shilling of capital, and now presents a statement of accounts showing liabilities'amounting to £318, with assets of £210. His receipts during the time of being m ■business amounted to £60, and his disbursements to £50. The difference thus shown m his liabilities and assets, and his receipts and expenditure he is unable to account for. Among the liabilities appears an item of thirteen guineas for a costume for his wife, and other items for jewellery. Mr A.A. Browne having been appointed trustee, a resolution was moved by Mr Duthie, and seconded by Mr Watt, instructing the trustee to institute -ci'iminal proceedings at once. . A, man named Thomas Reid, says the. " N.Z-. Times " of the 28th ult. narrowly escaped death by drowning yesterday morning. At about 3' o'clock the sentry" on board ,H.M.S. Wolverene heard cries for help coming vp 1 from the water, and on a boat being lowered it was found that- Reid was paddling about m the water nearly exhausted. He was picked up- taken onboard the ship, and attended by the doctor ; afterwards taken ashore, and removed to the Hospital. He was very little the worse for his ducking; and left "the Hospital during the morning. It appeared that Reid was going off to the hulk Gazelle, on which he is employed, when he fell accidentally out of the boat. It fortunately happened that the sentry on the Wolverene heard his cries. A curious thing connected with the Servian military bands is the" manner m which nearly all the regiments carry the big drum. Instead, as m other armies, of being slung m front of the man who plays, it, this instrument is. put upon a small twowheeled cart, drawn by a large dog, the latter being, so trained that he keeps his place m the band even through the longest mai'ches. The drummer walks behind the cart and performs -on the instrument as he goes along.— r-Belfast paper, .
The wife of the Tichborne Claimant has written to Mr Secretary Cross complaining of the manner m which her husband is treated, and asking for a personal interviewon the matter. The letter is signed "M. H. Tichborne." Mr Cross replies to " Mrs. M. H. Castro," and states that the prisoner "has the same opportunities that all convicts have of making any complaint he pleases, either to the Directors of Convict Prisons at their periodical visits to Dartmoor, or to the Secretary of State. A complaint was made by the prisoner m July last that he had been improperly punished by the prison authorities. This was fully enquired into, and ib was found that the convict bad been confined m a separate cell for one night and not further punished." 'Die reply also states that no further complaint has been made, and that the Secretary of Slate must . decline to grant a personal interview. — "Argus." .
" I hardly know whatjcind of an offering to make you for the coining Christinas," fondly lisped a young Chicago fellow to his true love, m her father's parlor, one evening last week. " You don't?" said she. " No," said he. A pause of several moments here took place, when suddenly she laid her little head upon his shoulder and murmured : "An offering, did you. say ?" " Yes, dear," he replied, " I can't conceive what kind of one to make you." "A-hem," said she, clearing her throat. And then she purled forth m silvery, cooing notes : ""Edward, dear, wouldn't an engagement ring b-be an offer-ring ?" It • was an awful thing to do what she did, but he didri*t seem to care for ■that — he was so glad---and besides it was Leap Year yet.— -" Cincinnatic CommeraiaL"
"Atticus," m the Melbourne "Leader," says : — At an up country township a few evenr ings ago an Opposition candidate delivered an election address, afcthe close of which he and his audience were surprised to see a well-known member of the Civil Service rise up to propose a resolution. The candidate could hardly conceal his delight as this gentleman, apparently trampling on the Civil Service rules, moved, "That m the opinion of this meeting Mr J). is a fit and proper person, and one well calculated to advance and substantially support "—at this point the mover paused for a minute to take a drink of water, while all the electors present remained dumb with astonishment at his daring. Being refreshed, he continued : — ■ " our reading room and library, by subscribing ten guineas towards it, and that the meeting at once resolve itself into a committee of the whole to attain that object." The resolution was carried amidst loud cheers, and the money was at once paid over. Femaie Maettss to kidney and urinary complaints are very numerous. The delicate organism of the -gentler sex renders it far. more susceptible to hurtful influences than the hai'dier male system.
