It lias been ascertained that thirtysix smacks were lost m the Nor6h Sea, owing to recent gales', with two hundred and fifteen lives, leaving eighty-eight widows and over two hundred children. Dr Cumtmng, preaching at the Scots Church, Covent Gardens, said thaj; all the students of prophecy were agreed that the world, and Europe especially, was now oh the eye of the greatest catastrophe that has ever happened m the history of mankind. The Russian Embassy has left Stamboul. The Czar of Russia m reviewing the army urged bravery » and. hoped for a speedy and glorious return.

The " Chronicle " says the G-overment refuse to assist m any way to facilitate the public business, and meanwhile the roads are becoming dangerous. The time for repairing them with econdmy is nearly past, and even the irew road formed by the Government round the Swineburn is being totally destroyed for want of attention. . . . Bishop Moran had a- narrow' escape" from a serious accident while travelling on Manuherikia plains. The horses started off and ran into a wire fence* but beyond a severe shaking and light bruises no injuries were received.
