TO THE EDITOR. Sir, — Having received from tin; Secretary of the Manawatu Highways Board, a copy of the resolution passed by them at their late meeting with reference to the resolutions parsed by the settlers at the late meeting m the Eaugitikei Line. I must confess that I agree with the members that they are incompetent to represent the various wards. Now Mr Editor, for a few facts concerning some of the members present at that Board meeting ; will one of them deny using the expression concerning a certain piece of road m the Sandon District about the number of culverts as being a disgrace aud waste of public money, the same member stated that while passing some woi'ks m the same district m company with the Inspector, that the Inspector's attention was directed to the want of some pegs m a through cutting, but took no notice of it, and the said member was obliged to go himself and borrow an axe, and, according to his stoiy, he soon put it to rights by placing three pegs m certain positions, too tedious to mention here. Will another member of that Board deny having certain tenders m his possession sent through the post office that should have been presented to the Board for their consideration, but would have never seen the light of day had not the unfortunate would-be-contractors thought proper to apply for their deposit lodged with the said tenders, and instead of. getting the contracts that some of them were justly entitled to, one of them was asked as a consolation to come and have a brandy. Now, Sir, for the above facts I am prepared to produce ample proof, and m such a state of things my- opinion is that the Highways Board wants purging of more than an incompetent inspector. As I have no wish to trespass too far at one time on your valuable space, I shall pick up the threads of this subject at a future date. Yours, See., W. McDouall. Palmerston North, April 24th, 1877.
