There is no doubt that the welfare of the town is linked with that of the suburbs, but, if the County* Council is just, the secession of the town cannot injure the surrounding districts ; if it is unjusty then town people are; justified m shaking off the yoke m selfdefence. "VvM." seems to think that the Corporation^ will deprive the residents of Palmerston of all influence m the County ■ Council ; but experience shows that the business-people seldom live m the townwhere they transact their business ; they generally live m the suburbs, which they will be ready and willing' to represent m the County Council. ! " Besides ; if we remain as we are, the County Council will not furnish Earere with a row of villas to connect it with Palmerston, which. the Municipality will probably do. The tow^s m this County and Eangitikei are running a race ; the prizes consist of prizes to suit every taste, — cathedrals, theatres, operas, colleges, libraries, chess clubs, &c. One town must' get all the prizes, and the people must come to the winning town to enjoy them.
