The next English mail via San Francisco and via Suez will close at the Palmerston North Post Office, on Monday, the 30th April, at 8.50 p.m. The s.s. Napier will leave Wellington for Foxton to-day (Wednesday), and will return to Wellington to-morrow after the arrival at Foxton of the midday train.. We liavo to acknowledge the receipt of communications signed respectively — " D. D.Walker," " W. McDouall," and " Viator," but have not room m our present issue to give them publicity. The Telegraph Department invites tenders for the supply and delivery of 2,000 telegraph poles at the Telegraph stores, Wellington. ' Specifications may be seen at the Telegraph Offices, Foxton, Feilding, and Palraerston North. By advertisement it will be seen that the 3rd Concert^ season 1876-77, of the Foxton Choral Society, under the conductorship of J. J. Beatty, Esq., will be 'held at Foxtou this (Wednesday) evening, commencing at 8 o'clock. From the success which has heretofore attended the concerts given by this Society, eulogy on our part is quite unnecessary. We would just state, however, that the programme for this evening is a good one, and that it needs no prophetic gift to predicate a treat for all who can avail themselves of the opportunity of attending. The Chairman of the Manawatu County Council gives notice by advertisments m our present issue of the adoption of certain resolutions by the Council at its last mseting ; of the appoiutment of Mr William Osborne as clerk to the Council ; of the removal of the County Offices to the building lately occupied by the Bank of New Zealand, Foxton } and notice is also given to settlei'3 within the County, that any person finding stray cattle upon County roads has power to impound them. After a series of disappointments to the Wesleyati body m Palmerston, and no doubt to the Eev gentleman himself, the Eev T. G-. Hammond arrived here on Monday last to assume the pastorate, under the superintendence of the Eev J. H. Simmonds of Sandon, of the Wesleyan Church m this township. As Mr Hammond is no stranger to the district we need say but little as to his qualifications as a minister of the Gospel. He is already well-known m this locality as an earnest worker m his Master's vineyard ; a man who values the soul life of his fellow men at a higher estimate than personal ease or worldly profit. As Mr Hammond is an indefatigable visitor we have no doubt that he will soon make himself known to all within his circuit who are desirous of forming his acquaintance ; and as he pursues his path of duty we feel assured that he will constantly add to the already large number of persons who hold him m high esteem. "We would remind all interested of the tea meeting and concert m connection with the Wesleyan Church, which are to take place m the Foresters' Hall, Palmer3ton, to-mor-row (Thursday) evening. The tea, which is given as a reception to the Eev. T. G. Hammond, will commence at 5 o'clock, and from the universal esteem m which Mr Hammond is held, we feel assured will be well attended. The concert will commence at 8 o'clock, and the Eevs. Hammond and Lawry will deliver addresses between the pieces contained m the flr3t part of the programme. The programme, which is an excellent one, is published m our advertising columns ; and as the price of admission to the concert is but Is, we may reasonably expect to see a very large attendance on the occasion. The Commission of the Peace of New Zealand, now numbers 1,000 naine3» In reply to a question asked us by Messrs. Bower and Mangen m the matter of the action of the Manawatu Highways Board m reference to their tender for work on No. 4 line, Foxton, we may state that the Board does not bind itself m any case to accept the lowest or any tender. With respect to the particular reasons which may have operated with the Board m this or any

other case we have nothing to do. The Secretary would no doubt furnish reasons for the action of the Board m the case of Messrs. Bower andMangen, if applied toby those gentlemen. All fears of a short supply of feed during the ensuing winter (says the "Wairarapa News Letter") have now vanished, the favorable weather which has prevailed during the last three or four weeks having given a splendid start to the grass. Oh the coast there is abundance of feed, and the runholders are looking forward to a a most favorable season. If the weather does not turn unusually cold, there should be a large crop of wool, for the weight and quality of the staple naturally depends upon the supply of good food. We are informed' says the "Post" that on Wednesday night Some inhuman wretches got hold of a dogin Willis-street, and amused themselves by cutting off its tail, after which they chased it up the street. Our informant states that they made very merry over their sport, more especially when the tortured animal howled m its agony. Such inhuman brutes would be all the better of an application of the cat. , A copy of Dr. Buller's " History of the Birds of New Zealand " was recently sold by auction m Dunedia, and fetched eight guineas. As there appears to be a very general demand for the book, we are glad to learn that the author has m preparation a small edition with woodcut illustrations', m lieu of the colored plates. This will bring' it within the reach of all lovers of natural history. — " Post." ' • The "Argus" of the 14th inst. says t— On Thursday evening some mischievous individual inserted an advertisement m a local paper for a large number of small boys to carry lunch to the pent up Government officials, application to be made at the Government Buildings. The result was that yesterday the Buildings were literally besieged by every possible variety of that interesting genus— small boy. Many of the applicants seemed lost m the extent of the passages and the number of rooms, and stood hopelessly gazing around, but others of a bolder type opened the first door they came to and en- ■ quired, "Please, Sir, do you want a boy to bring you lunch?" Messengers had at last to be placed on guard to prevent the admission of any more boys, and to refer all applicants to the office of the paper m which the advertisement appeared. In. connection with this subject we may mention that the new regulations have led to the devolopment of an unsuspected amount of talent m the culinary line, and that great, ingenuity has been displayed m improvising cooking utensils. One well-known gentleman has quite a little canteen, comprising all implements from a gridiron to a kettle, and m the neighborhood of his office a strong flavor of sausages prevails daily, and the cup that elieera but not inebriates is usually obtain- I able there. Another gentleman finds the j tongs very handy for cooking red herrings. J In fact, appetising odours now so sweeten the atmosphere of the buildings that almost every one find 3it absolutely necessary to' devote far more time than usual to the business of lunch. The hinges of the body. The joints are 'the hinges ' of the body. renders them stiff and unmanageable. A cold i 3 more apt to settle m the joints than anywhere else except the head. The use of the adulterated liquors of commerce is very apt to develop the earthy, chalky secretion which, m gout, is deposited upon them. The best substitute for such fiery potions, as well as a remedy for all rheumatic and gouty affections* is Udolpho Womb's , Schiedam aeomatic Schnapps Advt.
