Wednesday. The following tenders were received for the Mungaroa permanent way contract of the Wel lington -Masterton railway : — Accepted — J. Pobinson, Upper Hutt, £2,663. Declined— P. Johnston, £2,678; Topham, £2,841; J. McLean, £3,451 ; McLachlau, £3,816; McKirdy, £3,931. The Governor, Lord Hervey Phipps, Mr Le Patourel, the Commodore aud two officers of H.M. Wolverine, Dr Hector, and Mr Worry leave for Dunedin about, midnight, after attending the citizens' ball, to-night. H.M. Sapphire leaves to-morrow for Auckland. Friday. At a meeting of the Waste Lands Board a letter was read from the Hon. G. McLean staling that the necessary steps had been taken to obviate any inconvenience likely to arise from the reduction of the large survey staff of the Wellington District. The G-overnment had received the assurance of the Surveyor-General that there would be no difficulty m overtaking and meeting within a reasonable time all 1 he calls of land purchasers. Mr Holdswort.il remarked that six out of nine surveyors proposed to be removed would remain, and Mr Jackson had been instructed to execute all such survey work as was practicable by contract..
