CHRISTCHURCH.

Monday. In the Supreme Court, R. A- Buchanan, late clerk at Akaroa R.M. Court, was charged with embezzlement. From the evidence given it appeared that Buchanan "received for acting as Clerk of the Court, Customs officer, and Postmaster the sum of £120 per year. The books of the Court showed that they had been kept m a very curious manner. The jury returned a verdict of not guilty. Judge Johnston, m discharging Buchanan, took occasion to refer to the loose, manner m which some of the Government departments are conducted m country districts. He said it would, be well if a stricter supervision were kept over them generally than appears to be the case at present His Honor thought this could be done: by a periodical visit of inspection being made by an officer of the Government. Nathan. Powell, convicted of horse-stealing, was sentenced to three years.
