March 21. Haystack struck by lightening, causing thousands of pounds damage. A public meeting passed resolutions against free immigration as opposed to the interest of the Colony ; but favored assisted immigration. The Queensland Government will appoint a royal. conimission to enquire into the question of financial separation of the northern territory. The body of a male has been found at Wagga Wagga, with the skull beaten in, apparently by an axe. Verdict — wilful murder against persons unknown. The Mauritius advices had favorable effect on the sugar market. Good enquiry for refined. Martell's case brandy (sold) .to arrive, 29s 6d ; breadstuffs weak ; wheat 6s Id to 6s 2d. An elderly man named George Scott, has been committed for trial for forging an acceptance for £14,000. London telegram advising a rise of one penny on kerosene in New York has caused active local demand. D.R.O. candles sold at 9£ in bond ; currants improved, si. Eotorua goes south immediately after the arrival of the English mail.
