FOXTONJ RACES.

Wednesday, 21si March. The Manawatu Jockey Club's Annual Race Meeting was held to-day, under ; most favorable* .^auspices, the weather being all that ebuld Be desired. Most of the : -horses were m Poxton last night. At an early hour this morning visitors began to arrive, and on the advent of the first train from Feilding. and Ealnierston there was 'quite a crowd assembled. At ten o ? clock the first train -started fori-the races, and trains.

were continually going during the day to and from the course. By eleven -o'clock the assemblage on the ground numbered about six or seven _ hundred, people. The little rises of hills round theimsin. where the races took .place were lined with people, both European and Maoris. . The latter appeared m great force and seemed to' greatly enjoy the sport. On the course were the usual appliances to help one to spend money — m the shape of- lucky bags and roulette tables. There was also an organ which seemed to take the fancy of the Maoris greatly, likewise some children playing violins ..which also had their share of patronage.' ' Matters" proceeded very successfully during the Hurdle Race, when an accident happened. As Wairarapa and Si. -Albans were going over one of the hurdles they both fell, throwing their riders, who were much shaken, and Wairarapa had his shoulder broken. St. Albans on getting up made off and jumped some wire fencing, but after some , time he was recovered. Great credit is-due to the Stewards and other officials of .the Jockey Club for the mannerin which they conducted matters, and also to Mr Moinet, the Manager of the Railway and his staff for, their management J oi the Railway trips, there not being a single hitch throughout the day. The first race which started about eleven o'clock, was the HtrapLE Race of £25 ; entrance, 2 guiaagF; 2 miles and a distance, over sevenjt&nps, 3ft. 9in. high ; 1 stone over weight' f6r age. Mr A. Amon'B g g Arbitrator, aged. Red jacket, white sasb", and black cap, 10st61bs ... , 1 Mr Lumsden's Victor was scratched. v Unfortunately m this, race both Wairarapa and St. Albans fell at the last hurdle but one,- arid threw their riders. Hack Hurdle ' Race of entrances 10s 6d, with £5 added ; 2 miles,, over six jumps, 3ft. 9in. high ; second horse to save his stakes. Parawhenua. St. Albans won the first heat: Parawhenua did not go for the second heat, therefore it was a walk.
