A BRAVE ACT.
- Some time back a poor factory operative, had; his] leg i amputated m the Manchester infirmary, and ,the loss of blood was so great that his life was given up as hopeless, and he was all -but dead, when Dr. Hardie stated that , nothing but an infusion of human blood ;could save his life ; whereupon Mr •Irvin, one of the students m Manches!ten infirmary; 'at 1 once volunteered to be bled,! at the risk of hisowh life, and 25 ounces r 6i his /blood were taken from him an d ' inflised into ' the veins of the ! dying man, w,ho is. now quite recovered. ..The- Baron Barreto having heard of this heroic act from Dr. Hardie (who performedthe;operation), considered that some refcognitibn should be made to Mr Irvin for. saying the life of a fellowcreature at the risk of his own. He has accordingly presented Mr Irvin with Va most massive : chas6d cup, upon which is' the following .inscription ;—" This silver cup was presented, oh' October, • 1876, by the' Baron Bari-eto, of Brandonpark,' Suffolk, ioi Joseph Hehi'y Irvin, Esq.,; at the Infirmary,' Maiichester, as a remembrance af his heroic liravery by allowing M ounces of his own life bipod; to be taken from him. at the. risk of his own life to save the life of a fel-low-creature, >which ! was infused^ into the veins of ith^-popr dying man, where- ; by ; his lifes was'sayed; and • he -qtiite recovered;" «o> ..-.'■-., ■ ; v,
