PUBLIC HALL READING ROOM.
TO THE EDITOR. SiH,— Will the promoters of the Public Hall Beading Room kindly inform me whether they think it just to those subscribers who have derived no benefit from the old reading room to pay, out of their subscriptions, the debts of the defunct Society. I am sure the members of the new reading room will be only too glad to buy the periodicals and other property which belonged to the late Society j and which may be m J the present reading room, at a fair valuation. I sincerely hope for the success of the reading room that the original intention of the promoters will not be persevered m, as one certain result will be to deter many from becoming members of the institution, because they would not suffer their subscriptions to be applied m paying debts they were not party to creating, and, moreover, they could not feel that confidence m the management of the funds which is so necessary to the existence of every public institution of this nature. — I am, &c, S. Palmerston North, March 13, 1877.
