MELBOURNE.
February 16. The South Australian loan of half a million has been floated m London at £97-96. A man named Norman and his son were killed by lightning at Wedderburn. A strip of country at Hamilton, fifty miles by twenty-five, has been devastated by fire. A party of Russian mining engineers are inspecting the Victorian goldfields, but are very reticent as to what they are about. A telegram received to-day states that Sir William Jervis, the present Governor of the Straits, telegraphs that he is coming, out to report on the de- . fences of the colony. Verjr severe thunderstorms were experienced last week. A young man. was killed m Elizabeth-street by lightning. There were three other deaths from the same cause m the country, and several narrow escapes recorded. The rainfall as yet is scarcely sufficient to allay all apprehensions of drought, while m New South Wales matters are very serious, especially m the back country, where sheep and cattle are dying by thousands, and some stations have had to be abandoned for want of water. Samuel Romsden, who was buried yesterday, is reported to have left a large fortune. He began life as a stonemason m the early days of the colony.
