February 20. Lord Derby lias informed the Porte that although the English Government will not coerce the action of Turkey, it mil not feel bound to protect the Porte against the coercion of other powers. The Secretary for India and Earl Beaconsfield both expressed themselves as opposed to the policy of coercion. February 23. An animated discussion took place m the House of Commons last night on the propriety of resuming the debate adjourned from the 17th inst. Lord Hartington agreed not to press the question if the Government thought . that further discussion would embarrass them, and declined the challenge that the Opposition submitted, and to vote on the formal motion upon the policy of the- Government. tween the Powers, justified the feeling of confidence m regard to the preservation of peace, even supposing the Porte fails to carry out desired, reforms, as German interests did not prescribe any definite course.
