The meeting at Mr Deards' Hotel on Monday evening last was adjourned to Saturday evening next at 8 p.m. The attendance was not at all proportioned to the importance of the object m view, and the adjournment was a wise step under the circumstances. We hope to see a large meeting ou Saturday, for the matter to be considered is not only of great importance m itself, but it is one which will not" brook delay. The winter is approaching, and if the main road through the centre of the township be left m its present state, with a ditch full of storm water on either side, and insufficient room to turn a cart between them, serious accidents will be almost unavoidable during the long dark winterevenings. It will be for the meeting on Saturday to decide upon one of two courses — either to petition the General Government or the County Council on the subject. At the meeting on Monday the general impression seemed to be m favour of the former course. It was represented that the General Government was responsible for the state of the road, that it had never been under the care of the Provincial Government, and was exempt from the jurisdiction of the Local Board ; while the County Council had not the funds at their disposal to undertake the work. Something must be done and that soon, so we commend the matter to the attention of our fellow-townsmen, who will, we hope, muster m strength on Saturday evening.
